Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a disease of the eye that causes loss or distortion of central vision. It is commonly associated with age, UV exposure and genetics.

There are two types of AMD: dry and wet. You will be screened for macular degeneration during your eye exam at Goodman Eye Center. 


In the dry form, small deposits accumulate in the center of your retina causing mild visual distortion. As the disease progresses, this can cause scarring that leads to functional vision loss:



In the wet form, blood vessels in the macula start to leak causing loss of vision. If caught early, changes from wet AMD can be treated with retinal injections or laser:
